I - The Past Perfect Simple: Form
Pat perfect form in the affirmative (declarative) sentence
Subject + had + Past Participle + Object
Examples:
- I had played football.
- You had played football.
Pat perfect form in the Negative sentence
Subject + had not + Past Participle + Object
Examples:
- I had not played football.
- You had not played football.
Pat perfect form in the Interrogative sentence
had + Subject + Past Participle + Object
Examples:
- Had he played football?
- Had you played football?
II - The Past Perfect Simple: Use
The past perfect tense is used ta talk about what happened before a point in the past
Examples:
Hamid left when the football match had finished. (The football match had finished.)
In the sentence above there are two actions:Action 1: When the football match had finished. (past perfect simple) Action 2: Hamid left. (past simple)
The past perfect tense is often used when we report what people had said/ thought/ believed
Examples:
- John told me he had finished his homework.
- My father though I had gone to school.
- I believed that he had come to see me.
